Have you suddenly gotten the urge to organise your closets, start a new project, or begin a cleanse? If you have, that is what I call spring energy. I just love spring, except my nose starts to run; my eyes begin to water and itch and I sneeze all day long… LOL Nevertheless, I get a spring in my step and enthusiastic about life again!
How do you know it’s time to start a spring-clean in your body? If you are feeling stuck, indecisive, and/or unable to move forward with ideas or projects, your winter weight has hit an all high and you can’t bear the sight of you, or parts of you when you look in the mirror. It may even reflect on your home and you may want to spring clean your home too whilst you are at it.If we don’t purposely cleanse or fast as spring arrives, the body may naturally begin cleansing itself from excess oils, fats, salt and animal proteins by releasing a flu or cold. Some people may also suffer with odd aches and pains and they don’t know why. This is the body’s way of releasing excess, and/or toxins, and cleaning out.We can aid the body through this natural cleansing process by eating lightly prepared meals (steamed, sautéed, blanched and raw foods), less food overall, eliminating animal products for a specific period of time, or fasting from food entirely. The springtime, I believe, is the best time of year to go “vegan” or “vegetarian” for a while. Through my research I found traditionally, in many cultures around the world there has been some type of cleansing or fasting process, specifically in the spring. This apparently helps lift the weightiness of winter physically, emotionally and spiritually. Some examples include the Orthodox Greeks who fast from animal foods for up to seven weeks during the spring. They abstain from animal proteins and interestingly wine and olive oil is also restricted. The Catholics fast for 40 days prior to Easter, which they call lent. Lent is a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial. During Lent, participants eat sparingly or give up a particular food or habit. It’s not uncommon for people to give up smoking during Lent, or to swear off watching television or eating candy or telling lies. It’s six weeks of self-discipline.This fast also includes eating lighter meals and abstaining from meat on Fridays. Yogis practice austerity with their diets. They believe fasting changes the polarity of the physical body while raising its energetic sensations. They explain, toxins reside in the body’s fat stores, so when they fast, they become cleansed of these toxins, which make way for the attraction of higher spiritual vibrations.Shamans fast during vision quests. During these types of spiritual fasts, it is advised to pray or seek guidance. These two simple acts of worship (fasting and prayer) helps lighten the load on the digestive system, and open the body/mind/spirit to receive guidance and direction. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the spring correlates with the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. Reducing animal proteins, as well as fasting supports the healing and renewal of these organs in the process. It seems religions around the world and traditional healing therapies have some commonality.Although I am not fascinated with much of the habits of many of the religions I mentioned above, it fascinates me that we all understand the cleansing perspective of health. There are many other aspects to health, which I will be teaching you as we move forward together in uncovering the body and its functions. It is a very good idea to cleanse every spring. I do three to five days of colon cleansing, which I highly recommend to all my clients. I choose as little as 3 – 5 days, because my body is healthy. You know your body better than I do, so will know how much cleansing you need. I also recommend doing a gallbladder cleanse if you feel heavy, tired, unhealthy and spiritually flat. Lets get on with it to love learn’n, live the life that was designed for us!!!
