WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE HEALTH REFORM AND MEDICAL MISSIONARY WORK? PART 1
We have been blessed as Seventh DAy Adventists with a powerful Health Reform message. It was Christs desire for us to be known to the world through the health reform. He wanted us to be the head and not the tail, he wanted us to have the answers to the problem of the plagues.
It started out that way with BAttlecreek, where Dr. Kellogg who was appointed superintendent in 1876 brought the work of Seventh-day Adventists to the attention of the world, bringing him fame too. Unlike Christ, the fame got to his head... Just a bit of background…
God gave Sister White the vision of Health Reform on June 16, 1863. James White was ill and a group of people were praying for him. Christ did not want to simply heal him. He gave Ellen White a better gift. He gave her the Ministry of Healing. Friends we take the Ministry of Healing very lightly, still arguing on points that are so unnecessary.
In 1873 James and Ellen White encouraged Kelogg to take the medical course, and they assisted in his tuition expenses. In 1876, after finishing a two-year medical course, at age 24 he was appointed superintendent of the Health Reform Institute in Battle Creek, Michigan. It had opened ten years earlier in answer to a call from Sister White for Seventh-day Adventists to provide such an institution.
Kellogg cereals came out of the Health Reform work. General meals came out of Health Reform. The man who started it went to the Sanitarium in Battle creek to learn how to make cereal like that. There was another cereal called Elijah’s Manna. The man who started also went to the Sanitarium to learn how to make cereal our way. But today Elijah’s manna is now called Grape nuts.
Kings and Queens and men and women of stature all went to Battlecreek because God gave us a powerful message. The Ministry of Healing. The Health Reform and Medical Missionary work today is no longer the same thing. There are more medical facilities and practitioners of all types that we ever had, but we are further from Health Reform than 1863. The food has become worse than ever with people living on what is called fast food. (If you ask me something you can’t get any faster food than fruit.)
Kellogg had difficulty with those who differed with him. In early years he strongly defended Sister Ellen White and her message of health. But when she corrected him regarding his beliefs and practices, he began to pull away from the church.
Sister White warned him against separating the medical work from the church. She also was concerned that he had gathered too much power to himself. Despite Kellogg’s attempts to discredit her, she relentlessly tried to save him from apostasy. Sadly her counsels went largely unheeded, and when the Battle Creek Sanitarium burned in 1902, she saw it as a judgment against Kellogg’s teachings and policies.
The Health Reform is the right arm to the Gospel and it should be combined all the time and this will finish the work my friends. Jesus is still in the Most Holy place because the Gospel is not in its entirety.
The Health Reform and Medical Missionary work has been cast out coz we have lost the purpose of Health Reform. Everyone wants to learn the methods and the practices but we need to understand the purpose. No matter how much knowledge you have about fermentations, poultices and diet, and no matter how much you talk about it, it means nothing if it has no purpose.
So as we begin our Medical Missionary Training today, I pray you will open your heart to the truths for this time that are much needed throughout the world! God bless you Brothers and Sisters!
“The world is becoming more and more lawless. Soon great trouble will arise among the nations—trouble that will not cease until Jesus comes. We are on the very verge of the time of trouble, and perplexities that are scarcely dreamed of are before us. We are standing on the threshold of the crisis of the ages. In quick succession the judgments of God will follow one another—fire, and flood, and earthquake, with war and bloodshed…There are stormy times before us…” LDE 12
